Dating Tips: How to Make the First Phone Call

Calling someone for the first time can be intimidating and terrifying. However, if you really want to know someone and possibly start a relationship, it is important to put your fears aside and take the first step.
Here are a few tips to help you make the call!
Select the Best Time to Call: If you let your nerves takeover, you may call the person at the worst time, wherein he or she may inadvertently brush you off. When the person gives you their number, inquire about the best time to call. Because of varying work schedules, some people are easier to reach in the mornings, whereas others prefer to receive calls in the evening. If you don't know the best time, avoid calling very early in the mornings or late at night. As a rule: don't call people after 9 P.M.
Slow Down: When nervous, we tend to rush. Rushing may result in dialing the wrong number, which will prolong the first call. Besides, dialing the wrong number can cause a range of unnecessary emotions. For example, let's say a female answers the phone, and you quickly hang up the receiver and mistakenly think that the person on the line was a girlfriend or wife. Plus, dialing the wrong number will mean that the person never receives your message. In turn, you'll feel rejected.
Be Polite: Even though you've already spoken to the person, the first phone call can serve as a first impression. In this case, it is important to be respectful and polite. When the person answers the telephone, introduce yourself. Don't assume that the person will automatically recognize your voice. This is an unpleasant thought, however, the person may have exchanged telephone numbers with several different people. A great way to introduce yourself is, "Hi, this is Michelle, I'm the girl you met at the baseball game last Tuesday."
Leave a Message: Some people don't answer their telephone calls and choose to pre-screen calls. If you don't leave a message, the person may never return your phone call. Brief messages are best. Simply introduce yourself using the above example, state the date and time, and leave your contact number.
Don't Make Repeated Calls: If you make several phone calls, you'll give the impression of having "stalker tendencies," and the person may never return your call. Only call once and leave a brief message. If the person never calls back, assume that he or she isn't interested. There is always the chance that the person didn't get your message. However, if numbers were exchanged on the first meeting, they have a way of getting in contact with you.
