How to Balance a Freelance Writing Career

Getting Started as a Freelance Writer

Breaking into the world of freelance writing is tricky, and unfortunately, many aspiring writers give up to soon. In the beginning, you'll likely juggle two jobs - your day job (which pays the bills), and your freelance writing business (which can be unpredictable). Some people take a huge leap of faith and jump head first into the business. I guess this can work, but it will require quickly establishing a strong client base. It can take several weeks or months to find a few regular paying clients. Even if you do find enough work, juggling a freelance writing business alongside a 9 to 5 can be stressful and overwhelming - but the results are worth the sacrifice. Once you're able to kiss the time clock goodbye, and can enjoy the freedom of setting your own hours - you'll never look back.

Freelance writers are contractors, and most jobs are short-term. Thus, I strongly encourage all writers to plan their time well and to keep browsing the job boards. It's best to have too much work than not enough. This way, you'll always receive a steady paycheck.
