Writer's Resource...

How to Stay Busy as a Freelance Writer?

To make a living as a freelance writer you need one of two things. Either a lot of moderate paying gigs, or a couple of high paying gigs. Writing assignments will not fall into your lap, which means you need to actively patrol the job boards and aggressively apply for work. New freelance writers make the mistake of only applying for a few jobs, or getting too comfortable with a single client. While one client may pay well, there is no guarantee that you'll have the same job next month. In this industry, clients can cancel contracts, disappear, or simply not need your services anymore. The best way to handle this sudden drop in income is to be prepared. Apply, Apply, Apply! Also, don't be afraid to challenge yourself. I've reluctantly applied for many jobs that I thought I wasn't qualified for - the client took a chance anyway - and I always did a good job. This gave me experience in different writing areas, which opened the door to future opportunities.
