Writer's Resources.....

Disadvantages of a Freelance Writing Career

Freelance writing is perfect for persons who want to control their income and enjoy a flexible schedule. Even so, a freelance career has it's own set of drawbacks. Before deciding to become a freelance writer, make sure that you're prepared to deal with certain inconveniences.

1. Slow Paying Clients: Every freelance writer comes across a client who either can't pay for services rendered, or has a difficult time coming up with the money to pay for services. This is why it is important to have a contract. While it is normal for writers to recieve payment upon completion of an assignement, if the client doesn't pay, you retain rights to the work and are free to market the content elsewhere.

2. Annoying Clients: Dealing with rude and obnoxious clients is a part of the business. There is always that one person who believes that his or her project takes precedence over your personal life. These individuals usually offer low payouts and demand super-quick turnaround times.

3. Disappearing Acts: Be prepared to endure a "disappearing act." In other words, a long-time regular client who you've worked for diligently may suddenly disappear without explanation. Rather than send a quick message stating, "we no longer need your services," they'll ignore email correspondences or change their email address.

4. Competition: The majority of beginner writers look for online writing opportunities. The Internet is full of job postings. Unfortunately, the pool of writers is more than the availalbe jobs, and job posters receive a huge response to their ads. The initial ten or fifteen resumes may recieve a fair evaluation. The rest are deleted!
