How to Be a Successful Freelance Writer?

Starting a freelance writing career is not easy. With so few available jobs, and a lot of competition, it can take weeks to land a regular writing gig. Magazine writing pays more money, but it's harder to break into this market. The best advice I can give a new freelance writer is to start as a web content writer. These freelance writing jobs are easier to find, and payments are quick.

Many factors play a role in your success as a freelance writer. Getting a writing gig is just the start. To earn a living as a writer, and to find higher paying offers, you've got to be a good writer and professional.

1. Develop Your Writing Skills: To be a successful writer, you must know how to write a coherent sentence. If you pitch an idea or submit a query letter with tons of grammatical errors and poor sentence structures - don't expect a response from an editor.

2. Find a Niche: It's best to write about familiar subjects or focus on one particular niche. Editors may assign an article and offer a generous lead-time. In this case, you have plenty of time to research an unfamiliar topic and write a great article. On the other hand, if an assignment has a short turnaround time, perhaps only a few hours, stick to subjects that you know.

3. Ask Questions: If the details of an assignment are unclear, don't be afraid to ask questions. Many webmasters acknowledge their poor writing skills, wherein their writer's guidelines may need a little clarification.

4. Be Deadline-Oriented: Are you looking to screw-up a freelance writing opportunity? If so, submit an assignment late. Unexpected circumstances may delay completion of an assignment. In any case, contact the editor or webmaster immediately, and ask for an extension.
